Hiking from Casa Albayzin
The Sierra Nevada Natural Park is a beautiful area for hiking trips. Although many people will think of the Alpujarras as a well known place for hikers, the other side of Sierra Nevada is at least as attractive and very well suited for making trips on foot. The highest peak of the Spanish mainland Mulhacen (3481 metres) is a relatively easy destination in the summer. The snow on the tracks has melted and the temperatures are pleasant due to the altitude. On the way you are bound to see mountain goats, lagoons, waterfalls and many times you come across fields of snow. During the summer a mini-bus or the lifts will get you to a height of about 3000 metres. From there, Pico Veleta (3398 metres) is only an hour's walk away.
People that are looking for peace, water, views and nature can go for numerous walks from Casa Albayzin. Stepping directly out of the front door or at a short drive (15-45 minutes) you can make hiking trips that vary in length from one hour to two days. How about a trip that takes you to wade through a small river, offers spectacular views of the snow capped Sierra Nevada, then to Granada and the plains before finally getting you back to the river canyon? All in just one trip!
The lower part of Sierra Nevada is accessible for hikers throughout the year. The period from April to September is to be recommended because of the temperature and the snow that covers the peaks for the greater part of the summer. From Octobre to May there will be so much snow in the higher regions that only hikers with sufficient experience should go there.
The immediate surroundings of Casa Albayzin are an ideal place for joggers and runners. Stepping out of the front door you can immediately get onto the tracks that wind through the fields for shorter or longer runs.
Two-day trip
The Natural Park of Sierra Nevada is well suited for a trip that takes several days. We offer our guests a sleeping mat and bag so as to enable you to enjoy the unique experience of spending a night at 2500 metres. If you make a round trip you can choose between spending the night in a mountain refuge or a mountain inn (Poqueira Refuge). The latter offers beds, showers etc. and you can also order a hot meal. The tracks are generally of good quality. If you stay in a refuge or inn, you do not have to carry lots of gear, so walkers with little experience or families can still get a great feel of being in the mountain heights.
Sierra Nevada cross
We are currently making a route from Sierra Nevada to the Alpujarras. This individual trip will take 3-4 days. It will not be technically difficult, but the distances that have to be covered per day (6-8 hours) require sufficient training. The trip will lead to, among others, Pico Veleta and Mulhacen. Depending on your own preferences you can spend the nights in a tent or refuges (partially unmanned). We will provide maps, descriptions and, if necessary, will make reservations.
