Skiing in Sierra Nevada
Casa Albayzin is well situated for a skiing holiday in Sierra Nevada. The resort is opened from December until the end of April, obviously depending on the snow conditions. The big difference in altitude between Granada and the ski resort accounts for equally big differences in temperature and weather. A day that is not so nice for skiing may be a perfect day for a visit to Granada or the coast.
Since the house lies close to Granada and the coast (40. min.), you can change skiing with visiting the Alhambra or a lunch on the beach. Spending a night in the city of Granada with its many bars that offer free tapas, is a wonderful form of 'apres-ski', preceded if you wish by a relaxing visit to the Arab cold and hot water baths.
The ski resort lies at the highest peaks of the Spanish mainland. The highest run starts just below the summit of Pico Veleta (3398 m). On a clear day, you can see the Meditteranean and Morocco from here. The situation of the ski resort is fairly unique. Granada lies at an altitude of about 800 metres, whereas the ski resort lies at 2100-3300 m. The views of Granada and its surrounding plains and mountain ranges are spectacular. Moreover, you have more hours of daylight here than in ski resorts in the North or Central-Europe. The sun only sets at 18.30, so you can enjoy the whole day.
The resort has 84 km (55 miles) of runs for everybody. The wide and well groomed blue runs are very well suited for families with children. The red runs are more narrow and offer more of a challenge for those that seek more excitement. The runs are not very crowded and normally you do not have to wait very long at the lifts. Of course all facilities for a perfect skiing holiday can be found here: ski rental, schools, restaurants etc. There is even an ice skate ring.
